Beautiful Old Broads go to the movies

We made our annual trek to the movies over the holidays.  After reading all the reviews, I decided on seeing "Saving Mr. Banks".  An excellent choice.  So off we went.  The thing is I like to arrive at the show early.  I don't want to stumble in the dark looking for a seat and I want to be there right from the beginning.  And so we did arrive early and were met (bombarded) with noisy commercials streaming across the screen like fire ants, one after another.  There was one from the local hospital offering to replace my hip (sorry, I'm kinda attached to the one I have) and one from the pest control folks.  Gee, I'd prefer to forget that termites may be destroying my house while I sit here.  Also the oil and lube place and car wash advertised and did I mention the local funeral home.  Cremation anyone?  Last was the sincere female gynecologist, the sight of which conjured up images of mammograms and pap smears.  Gosh, just what you want when you head to the show for an afternoon of escapism.  Finally the lights dimmed and the coming attactions came on.  Very, very loud and these movies will not reach the theater until maybe next May.  Do these people not know I can't remember what's happening next week, nevermind next May?

At last...the movie.  We settled in for a couple of hours of pure enjoyment as the story of how "Mary Poppins" was brought to the screen by Walt Disney played impeccably by Tom Hanks.  And Emma Thompson as the author, P.L. Travers was delightful.  When she begins to tap her well shod toe to "Let's Go Fly a Kite",  you will grin from ear to ear.  I promise you'll be charmed.

Not in GO TO MOVIES mode?  Want a fine DVD to watch?  Rent or stream "Hachi" If you love Richard Gere and dogs...or dogs and Richard Gere, whichever works for you...this movie is a winner.  Based on a Japanese folk tale I believe.  Have a box of tissues nearby and enjoy.  If you have a wonderful movie to share with beautiful old broads, please do.   See you next Friday.

  1. I love to go to movies but my guy does not. Sad. He did enjoy the Marigold hotel pic, which I made him see.
Must admit the ads before movies at theater are a pain. And always way too loud. I may be losing hearing but would rather attribute it to Rolling Stones concert than gyn ads!
